45-year-old man held for wife's rape and murder
Mumbai: Thane’s Shahapur police arrested a 45-year-old husband who allegedly raped, strangled his wife then mutilated her private parts over his suspicion that she was allegedly involved in an extra-marital relationship. The police found her body dumped in a drain, a kilometre away from the couple’s residence, after locals spotted it in the early hours of Tuesday. The police arrested husband on complaint of the deceased’s brother.
The arrested accused was identified as Santosh Shelke (45), who murdered his wife Sunita after meeting her on her way returning home from work. The police said that the incident seems to have taken place between 5.30 pm and 8 pm on Monday. The couple with their two teenaged children stayed in Birwadi village.
“The victim was working in the neighbouring Meghegaon and would walk down around a kilometre back home everyday. The accused had suspicion of her having extramarital affair at her workplace. He met her near an isolated spot and strangled her to death with the sari that she was wearing,” said Mahesh Shetye, senior inspector of Shahapur police station.
The police said that the accused, who is jobless allegedly forced her into having sex at the spot before strangulating her to death.
The accused on the other hand approached police to lodged complaint after local villagers found Sunita’s body.
“Her brother however told us the details of the skirmishes that they were having and based on it we registered a case against him,” added Shetye.
