Heavy police bandobast seen at railway stations
Mumbai: In view of past instances of violence on the night of Shab-e-Barat, the Government Railway Police (GRP) stepped up presence at some railway stations on Tuesday when the festival was observed.
The State Reserve Police (SRP) was deployed to assist railway police in the intervening night of May 1 and May 2. There was heavy bandobast at Mahim, Byculla and Govandi stations,officials said.
The GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) was present at all major railway stations. Some stations that had earlier witnessed instances of violence saw additional deployment of the SRPF, said officials. Stations earmarked for heavy security deployment were Mahim, Mumbai Central, Wadala, Govandi, Mankhurd, Byculla and Kurla.
Sunil Bhamare, GRP spokesperson confirmed that there was sizeable police presence at some stations to assist the crowd and avoid untoward incidents.
Public address systems were kept handy in case the situation so warranted. The police said that criminal action would be taken against those targeting any railway property.
