J Dey murder case verdict likely today

Deported gangster Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan is the prime accused who is facing the trial.

Mumbai: A special MCOCA court is expected to pronounce the judgment in connection with the case related to the 2011 murder of senior journalist J Dey on Wednesday.

Deported gangster Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan is the prime accused who is facing the trial.

Unknown bikers had shot dead J Dey in Powai area on June 11, 2011 when he was going to his house. The prosecution case is that Rajan directed his men to kill Dey because he was miffed with some articles written by Dey and also because of a planned book of Dey in which he was allegedly about to portray Rajan as a ‘chindi’ (petty) criminal. The book, ‘Chindi - Rags to Riches’ was to be about 20 gangsters who rose from humble origin.

The police had arrested Rajan at Bali airport in Indonesia on October 25, 2015 and was deported to India.

The police had filed chargesheet against Rajan on August 31, 2016 in this case. Special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat closed the case after examining around 155 witnesses, of whom around 8 turned hostile.

Mr Gharat then started his final arguments in the case on January 31 this year and the court reserved order on the case on April 3 after the defence too completed final arguments.
