MUMBAI: Over a week after Shiv Sena deputy shakha pramukh Sachin Sawant was shot dead in Malad, the police is yet to make any progress in the probe. The crime branch, which is simultaneously investigating the case, suspects that the shooters might be contract killers from outside Maharashtra and may have fled from the state. The sketch of one of the accused has been sent to all police stations.

The police suspects that the two unidentified men who shot Sawant at point blank range in a busy Gokul Nagar lane last Sunday were hitmen hired from adifferent state.

A party worker said on condition of anonymity, “The recently concluded bhoomi pujan ceremony of the SRA project at Kandivali, in which Mr Sawant had invested heavily, is suspected to have led to his murder.”

Udaykumar Rajeshirke, senior police inspector of Kurar police station, said, “The probe is underway but at a slow pace, as the sketch available with the police does not belong to any of the known assailants in police records. Also, the CCTV footage acquired from the end of the Gokul Nagar lane is showing unclear images, making it difficult to ascertain the matching identity.”
