Bombay HC gets 14 new judges
Mumbai: President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed 14 new judges for the Bombay High Court, bringing up the strength of the court to 75. But since it needs a total number of 94 judges, it still falls short by 19. This shortage is not just restricted to the state. The approved strength of the 24 High Courts across the country is 1,079 judges, but they have been functioning with only 629 judges.
The appointments were based on the two different notifications issued by the Law Ministry, dated May 31. According to the notification, “in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President (Pranab Mukherjee) is pleased to appoint eight judges.” And in a second similar notification, the list of another six judges was mentioned. They have all been appointed for a period of two years from the day they assume charge.
