Breakdown in substation leads to power cuts in Thane

This substation supplies power to Thane and Mulund, Vashi and Airoli.

Mumbai: A breakdown of transformers in the 400/200 KV EHV substation of Maharashtra Transmission Company at Kalva (Thane) has caused some parts of Navi Mumbai and Thane district to experience load-shedding since Thursday night. Repair work will be completed in a few days.

This substation supplies power to many parts of Thane, Mulund, Vashi, Airoli and few other parts of Navi Mumbai. It also supplies power to the Belapur industrial estate, Turbhe and in other parts. Because of the breakdown in the system of the transmission company, other substation and the system is overloaded. So in order to manage the load, Mahavitaran has started the load-shedding in
the rotation across Thane and Navi Mumbai .

Due to summer, the demand for power has increased and now it has become very difficult to manage. So the distribution company requested the consumers to use as little power as possible. Repair work will continue on Saturday and the power supply will be restored, said the company spokesperson.

Despite shortage of coal since last year, which has affected the thermal power generation, Mahavitaran has managed to supply power in the face of demand of more than 20,000 MW many times. The company purchased cheaper power from
private companies and power exchange for less than '4 per unit with proper planning which avoided loadshedding, said senior officers.
