Mumbai: In order to tackle the severe water crisis in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will start using the reserved water stock in the Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarana lakes from June 15.

According to civic data, there is only 10 per cent water stock left in the lakes supplying water to the city.

According to civic officials, there is a reserved stock of 1.70 lakh million litres in the Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarana lakes, of which, 70,000 million litres is from Upper Vaitarana and one lakh million litres is from Bhatsa.

It will be used from June 15 to ensure regular water supply. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has already stopped drawing water from Upper Vaitarana as its useful content has dropped to zero.

As on May 31, the water level in lakes supplying water to Mumbai is just 1.47 lakh million litres, which is about 10 per cent of the required supply. This is the lowest water stock available in the last two years.

“Although the water stock is less this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will ensure that Mumbaikars do not face any inconvenience due to this. We have directed the civic administration to ensure water supply in a planned manner,” said mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar.

The BMC  supplies around 3,420 million litres to Mumbai daily. However, due to inadequate rainfall, the civic body has imposed a 10 per cent and 15 per cent water cut in residential, commercial and industrial premises.

After a good rainfall in June-July last year, there was scanty rain in August and September due to which the civic body had to impose water cuts in the city.

Powai area to face water cut

While the city is already reeling under water cuts, residents of K-East and G-North wards in Mumbai will have no water on June 6 and June 7 due to the Tansa pipeline repair work which the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is undertaking.

According to civic officials, the BMC is taking up emergency technical work for repair of 1,800 mm diameter Tansa West water main behind L&T Compound, Powai on June 6 at 10 am. The work will be completed on June 7 at 10 am.

Due to this, there will be no water supply to some of the areas in these two wards till the work is completed.
