Rain kills auto driver; services hit

65-yr-old dies in tree collapse; more than 50 train services delayed on Central Railway.

Mumbai: Rains wreaked havoc in the city once again, as a man died after a tree fell on him and train services were disrupted. After brief spells of drizzle for the last two days, heavy rain lashed the Mumbai city and the adjoining area on Saturday. An auto-rickshaw driver, Rajmani Yadav (65), died after a big branch of a tree fell on his vehicle in the Mumbai suburb.

According to an official of disaster control room of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident took place on Saturday morning at 8.16 am near Saibaba Nagar in Borivali (West).

The victim, Rajmani Yadav, was declared dead after he was admitted to the hospital.

The police sub-inspector Sayaji Kolekar said that the auto-rickshaw driver was a resident of a chawl near Raheja Township at Malad (East). After dropping a passenger at Saibaba Nagar Borivali (West), while returning a big branch of a tree fell on his auto-rickshaw.

The police reached the spot and called fire brigade for the help. Meanwhile, the passers-by removed the branch. Later, Yadav was admitted to Shatabdi Hospital, where he declared dead. According to Mr Kolekar, Yadav suffered serious head injury and as the branch was big, the auto-rickshaw turned turtle. The police has registered an accidental death report (ADR).

Meanwhile, a part of a foot-over-bridge collapsed near Hanuman Mandir, Francis wadi in Jogeshwari (East). According to the police, the foot- overbridge was old.

A 45-year-old man suffered minor injuries in the bridge collapse, said Rajendra Nikam, a senior police inspector at Jogeshwari police station.

Minor signal failures due to water-logging hit services at Central Railways (CR) as more than 50 trains were delayed. The Central Railways (CR) witnessed a delay of 15 to 20 minute due to signal failures caused by water-logging at a few spots like Kalwa and Sion.

The Harbour line also witnessed major disruption in the afternoon after the failure of signals on CR. The train services towards CST were halted between 11.50 am and 12.30 pm. The slow train services towards Panvel were also disrupted for 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, The Mumbai Metrological Department has predicted light to heavy drizzle in the city for the next 24 hours.
