BMC finally passes Mumbai's development plan for 2014-2034
Mumbai: The much-delayed Deve-lopment Plan (DP) 2014-2034 was finally passed on Tuesday by the Brihan-mumbai Municipal Cor-poration (BMC). 108 corporators were present in the house, and 267 amendments were suggested to the plan.
After all the amendments were suggested by the political parties, civic body chief Ajoy Mehta said that the DP would generate 80 lakh employment opportunities in the city and fulfil the dream of affordable housing. Mr Mehta added that salt pan lands, which were earlier reserved as No Develo-pment Zone will now be utilised for affordable housing for the low-income groups, who can buy a house for around Rs 14 lakh.
“Thus, the dream of affordable housing will be fulfilled in Mumbai,” said Mr Mehta. Around 2,000 hectares of land will be freed from the reservation and will be developed for affordable housing. As per the new DP design, open spaces for per person will increase four fold once the plan is implemented. The civic body will hand over the 600-page long document of the development plan to the state government for further clearance on August 2.
The draft was supposed to be cleared by July 18, but the ruling party Shiv Sena demanded more extension to the plan.
Till now, four extensions have been sought by the civic body for DP. The BJP overpowered the ruling party by suggesting 114 amendments.
