MAIDC officials arrested over bribery charges
Mumbai: The state Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested a deputy general manager and a regional manager of the Maharashtra Agro Industries Development Corporation Ltd (MAIDC) for demanding bribe of Rs 3.32 lakh for releasing a cheque of Rs 90 lakh to a dealer.
The two accused were identified as Rajendra Shinde (58), deputy GM (fertilisers) and SS Brahmankar, regional manager of MAIDC in Goregaon office.
Anti-Corruption Bureau officials laid a trap after the dealer lodged a complaint with them.
“The dealer had supplied HDPE pipes and fittings to MAIDC for its agriculture related projects, which have been executed state-wide,” said an ACB officer.
“The total bill for the supplies was around Rs 3 crore, and the last cheque of Rs 90 lakh was pending to be released,” the officer further said.
The two accused officers, however, told the dealer that he would have to pay 2 percent of the pending amount if he wanted the cheque to be disbursed soon.
The complaint was lodged, and the accused were apprehended before the money could
exchange hands, the officials said.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau has registered a case under Prevention of Corruption Act against the two officers and has started a detailed enquiry into the incident.
The records of the accused will also be examined to ascertain if they were involved in any case of bribery in the past.
