Ambedkar scion dismisses idea of economic reservation
Mumbai: Bharatiya Republican Party Bahujan Mahasangh’s Prakash Ambedkar, who is the grandson of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, has warned that any attempt to disturb the existing reservation structure would trigger havoc, a mass revolt in India.
Mr Ambedkar described the idea of ‘economic reservation’ as a basis for grant of reservation as “fruitless”. He also raised questions about making any ‘amendments in the Constitution’ for granting reservation to the Maratha community.
The idea of economic reservation came into public sphere after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray made a statement. Mr Ambedkar reacted strongly on the issue, saying, “If anything like bringing economic reservation to replace the current reservation system comes in the Parliament then it will create a havoc in India. People will come on road. The communities which are receiving the reservation currently won’t let it go.”
“Do they know anything about the Constitution? Economic reservation will force to change the whole book and not just a clause,” Mr Ambedkar added.
The grandson of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar also slammed Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar over his statements about making amendments in the Constitution. Further, he claimed that Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar was also of opinion to give reservation to Maratha community. “There are some references in his writings. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar wanted to bring Maratha community under the scope of educational reservation,” he said.
