Police probing negligence angle in Chandivali mishap

The building collapsed at around 5.35 pm on Saturday after a slab broke off from the middle portion during the demolition process.

Mumbai: Six days after a six-storey building in Chandivali collapsed while being demolished — killing six persons and injuring three others who are being treated at civic-run Rajawadi Hospital — the police is ascertaining if the crash was due to
negligence.

The Saki Naka police is awaiting documents related to the building. Avinash Dharmadhikari, senior police inspector, Saki Naka police station, said, “Till now, only an accidental death report (ADR) has been registered in the case involving deaths of labourers, but we have not registered any case on the negligence aspect, which is still being ascertained.”

Mr Dharmadhikari said that the building’s demolition had been authorised by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in order to convert it into a residential
complex.

The senior police inspector added, “Since the structure was demolished starting with the top floors, they kept heavy machines such as Poclain and JCB excavators
on the lower floor even as the upper floor was getting demolished.”

The building collapsed at around 5.35 pm on Saturday after a slab broke off from the middle portion during the demolition process.

An official involved in the rescue operation told this newspaper that only the middle portion of the building had collapsed, while other parts were intact.
