Mumbai: In an effort to encourage more tree plantation, Mission Green Mumbai (MGM), an initiative led by eco-warrior Subhajit Mukherjee, has started a movement to prepare one lakh ‘seed modaks’ during the 10-day-long Ganeshotsav.

So far, around 11,000 such modaks have been prepared.

These special modaks are made of soil and seeds of fruits or vegetables, which devotees can distribute as ‘prasad’. People can plant these modaks in flowerpots at home or in their building premises.

“People can come voluntarily to help us make these ‘seed modaks’. It takes one minute to make one modak. Many mandals have also come forward to help us. Some of them are also taking these modaks for distribution,” Mr Mukherjee said.

Several Ganpati mandals, including those in Charkop, Magathane, Neral and Oshiwara, will be distributing these ‘seed modaks’.

“The objective is to celebrate the festival in environment-friendly manner. Instead of distributing sweet modaks, people can distribute these ‘green modaks’. Once planted, it will take six to eight days to bear fruit,” Mr Mukherjee said.
