Congress removes Priya Dutt from secretary post

She tweeted on Sunday that she had received a letter relieving her of her duties as AICC secretary.

Mumbai: Congress leader Priya Dutt, a former Lok Sabha MP from North-Central constituency, was removed from the position of secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) on September 26. Ms Dutt thanked the party for giving the responsibility in a tweet.

The Congress leader tweeted on Sunday, “I recieved a letter relieving me of my duties as secretary AICC, I am very Thank full and extremely grateful to Mrs Gandhi and Rahulji to have given me this opportunity to serve the party for all these years. I thank all my colleagues in AICC for their help and guidance (sic).”

Hours later, Ms Dutt issued a clarification of sorts, tweeting, “Want to clarify there is nothing to be upset about this letter, this is a process, I have been AICC secretary long enough, new and young people need to be brought into the organisation. If each one holds on to positions forever where will the other aspirants go.”

Ms Dutt, the daughter of the MP and legendary actor Sunil Dutt contested the Lok Sabha elections after the death of her father and became MP in 2005. She won the elections of 2009 again, but in 2014 BJP MP Poonam Mahajan defeated her in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi wave.

Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam had announced again her candidature from this constituency in the meeting on Sunday, but many workers opposed the move as she had not been active in the party in last four years and had not visited the constituency. The Dutt family was close to former Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
