3 MBA students drown while swimming in dam
Mumbai: Three students of management from a Pune college died Thursday after drowning in the Mulashi dam.
The trio, along with their friends, had gone for a picnic to the dam and drowned due to their inability to swim.
The deceased have been identified as Shubhamraj Sinha (Bihar), Sangita Negi (Delhi) and Shivkumar (Uttar Pradesh) – all of them 22 years’ old.
They were in their first year of the Masters in Business Management course at Bharatiya Vidyapeeth Katraj, Pune.
A group of 10 Master of Business Administration (MBA) students from Bharatiya Vidyapeeth had gone for a picnic to Valne village near the dam. After a night out, some students entered the dam waters for a swim at around 7 am, according to an official of the Pune police control. Sadly, they failed to gauge the depth of the water and at least three went missing.
The others called for help, after which, rescue teams rushed to the spot.
A.V. Dhumal, police inspector, Paud police station, said, “Ten MBA students including five girls and five boys of the Bharatiya Vidyapeeth had gone for a picnic to Mulashi dam which is 18 km from Pune.
All of them entered the water to enjoy a swim. However, three of them did not know how to swim and started drowning. Responding to their screams for help, fellow students tried to save them but in vain.”
“The students called for help and also made a call to the local police station. The police immediately reached the spot. The students were fished out of the water and taken to a nearby hospital in Paud where the doctors declared them brought dead.
Later, their bodies were moved to Sassoon General Hospital for a post-mortem.
Their parents were informed immediately. As the parents are from other states, they have to come to Pune for their last rites,” said PI Dhumal.
