Top cops may face narco in jail inmate death case
Mumbai: The Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Ballard Pier on Wednesday issued a notice to a few senior officers including DIG (prison) Swati Sathe, Dr Tatyarao Lahane, dean of J J Hospital and Mumbai police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar, among others, for conducting narco analysis, brain mapping, lie detector test and CDR, voice analysis and decoded conversation to find out the truth behind the murder of Byculla women's prison inmate Manju Shetye.
A senior police officer said, “The 37th MM court has only called for the say of the respondents on the next date of the hearing.” Shetye died on June 23 after allegedly getting assaulted by six prison officials.
The notice was moved by a case eye-witness, Mariam Shaikh, who has alleged threat to her safety for calling out the jail staff who was involved in beating up Shetye which led to her death.
The application was moved by Shaikh's lawyer Nitin Satpute, who sought for call records details, voice analysis and recording of conversation between Padsalgikar, Sathe and Dr Lahane from June 23 to July 10.
The application also prayed for directions to DCP Zone III to conduct a narco analysis, brain mapping and lie detector tests on certain prison officials and others.
Mr Satpute said, "The 37th metropolitan magistrate has allowed the application and issued notice to the above mentioned authorities and has kept the matter for appearance wherein the above mentioned persons have been asked to give consent to undergo the narco test, brain mapping and lie detector test on them."
He said that the appearance is to be held on August 9.
