200 railway officials will add to cost: Sources

The Union minister has chalked out a plan to improve railway infrastructure in the city.

Mumbai: Two hundred officials that will be brought in from various parts of India to implement the plan chalked out by Union railway minister Piyush Goyal for improving railway infrastructure in the city will add to the expenditure of the railways, said an official. The officials, who will be stationed in suburbs where work will be underway on FOBs, will also bring with them additional staff such as personal assistant steno – increasing the expenditure of the railways.

Railway officials, who were present at the meeting with Mr Goyal on Saturday, believe that this will not necessarily sort out the problems faced by Mumbai railway system. The authorities said, “An official will require at least two assistants or around the top thirty out of the two hundred officials are likely to ask for their own point man while handling this project.”

For example, both Central and Western railways have two additional divisional railway managers, and the numbers will be increased to three, said a source. Also, additional personnel will be deployed for engineering and construction. The WR and CR suffer a loss of nearly Rs 15, 000 crore per year.
