MBMC seizes 3k kg of plastic from godowns

Fines amounting Rs 75,000 were slapped on the owners of the establishments.

Mumbai: A special squad from the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) conducted raids at two establishments in the city and seized thousands of kilogram of banned packaging material on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team led by ward officer Sanjay Donde and Abhay Sonawane swooped down on two godowns located in the BP Road area of Bhayandar (east). More than 3,000 kilograms of banned packaging material had been stocked in both the godowns, officials said. Fines amounting Rs 75,000 were slapped on the owners of the establishments.

“Meanwhile in their regular drive against those selling and using plastic bags in the twin-city, 300 kilograms of banned packaging material was seized and fines amounting Rs 41,000 was collected from the offenders.” said deputy municipal commissioner Sambhaji Panpatte.

After the ban was enforced in March 2018, the MBMC had formed 13 special squads each comprising five personnel led by the respective zonal sanitary inspectors, who have been empowered to swoop down on erring establishment, seize the banned material and impose fines on the violators.
