Railway runs local in honour of Gandhi

Four locos (engines) of outstation trains have been decorated on the theme of cleanliness.

Mumbai: On the 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Central Railway (CR) ran a tri-colour local train on the trans-harbour line bearing a painting of the father of the nation.

In addition to this, four locos (engines) of outstation trains have been decorated on the theme of cleanliness. The locos include three diesel and one electrical engine. The locos hauled the Mumbai-Hyderabad Express, Mumbai-Chennai Central Express, Dadar-Ratnagiri Passenger and Mumbai-Pune Deccan Queen.

The move is expected to create awareness about cleanliness among the over 45 lakh commuters who use the CR’s suburban services. D.K. Sharma, general manager of CR, also commissioned a digital wall at suburban concourse, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

Sunil Udasi, chief public relations officer of CR, said Central Railway School and Kalyan and Kalva car shed employees had jointly painted the EMU rake. This local train presently runs on the Thane-Vashi/Panvel trans-harbour line section.

Meanwhile, the Western Railway (WR) also celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on a grand scale as 12 stations under its jurisdiction that were frequently visited by Mahatma Gandhi were specially decorated with thematic paintings depicting various aspects of the great personality. Prabhat pheries, sarva dharma prarthana sabhas, special cleanliness drives and cultural competitions were held in all six divisions of Western Railway.
