Mumbai: The Maharashtra and Mumbai units of Congress have decided to support vice president Rahul Gandhi’s nomination for the party president’s post by signing a resolution. The party leaders in Mumbai gathered on Saturday for the signing of resolution while the state leaders will meet on Sunday for the same.

“We are supporting the nomination of Rahul Gandhi for the party president’s post by signing the resolution. Ten leaders will back the resolution on Saturday and will send it to Delhi,” Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam said.

Congress leaders from Maharashtra Regional Congress Committee will also sign another resolution backing Rahul Gandhi. Ten Pradesh Congress Committee delegates are required to seek his consent on the nomination papers. Gurudas Kamat, Milind Deora, Priya Dutt, Eknath Gaikwad, Kripashankar Singh, Chandrakant Handore, Baba Siddique were present for the signing of resolution in Mumbai.

Maharashtra Congress secretary Shehzad Poonawalla on Wednesday had alleged that the process of organising elections for party president was manipulated to elevate Rahul Gandhi. He even challenged Mr Gandhi’s leadership and criticised dynasty politics. Mr Poonawalla’s brother, Tehseen, is married to Mr Gandhi’s brother-in-law Robert Vadra’s sister Monicka. However, Maharashtra state president Ashok Chavan slammed the Mr Poonawalla’s remarks and supported Mr Gandhi’s elevation to the post of party president.
