BJP's push to capture' Shiv Sena's agenda
Mumbai: Be it a memorial for Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray; getting the Centre’s nod for the Rs 600 crore renovation of Raigad Fort; chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’ push for the coastal road; or grand celebrations in lieu of Marathi Bhasha Divas, BJP is fast taking over what is essentially Shiv Sena’s agenda. According to political observers, this could be part of BJP’s strategy in the event Sena withdraws from the state government.
After a bitter battle for municipal corporation seats, neither party is in a mood to blink with both busy exploring options to go it alone. Mr Fadnavis on Tuesday brought in the Centre’s assurance for two projects that are close to Sena’s heart; one – renovation of Shivaji Maharaj’s capital Raigad Fort and two – a Rs 604 crore plan for the coastal road. The CM also got the environmental ministry’s assurance in terms of permission with respect to the coastal regulatory zone (CRZ).
Further, BMC cleared land for the mayor’s bungalow in Dadar and for the memorial for Bal Thackeray. BJP included this in its manifesto, which is being seen as the party’s attempt to win over Marathi and pro-Hindutva voters who had a soft corner for the Sena founder. On February 27, the state cultural ministry, which comes under BJP, organised a grand celebration in lieu of Marathi Bhasha Din (Marathi language day). Marathi has been Sena’s principal political narrative for decades and BJP’s taking on the mantle is being seen as an attempt to make a dent in Sena’s core vote bank.
Senior journalist Nikhil Wagle said, “It is BJP’s strategy to check Sena’s political narrative. From BJP’s campaign in the assembly elections to its recent decisions, one can easily see this. Every symbol that matters to Sena’s political strength - from Shivaji to Ganesh and the Navratri festival, BJP is capturing Sena’s space. You will see this in future as well.”
