Mumbai: The BMC on Tuesday denied that it is supplying potable water for maintanance of ground at Wankhede stadium during the Indian Premier League (IPL), which starts on April 7. The water tankers provided only non potable water at the stadium for non-drinking and non-sanitation purpose at the stadium, the civic body informed while replying to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Bombay high court.

Loksatta Movement, an NGO, has filed the PIL in the HC in 2016, raising concerns over water usage for ground management during the IPL tournament, when the state was reeling under drought.

A division bench of Justices A S Oka and Riyaz Chagla, which is hearing the PIL, directed the BMC to state its stand on the water supply issue through an affidavit. During an earlier hearing of the matter, the BMC had told the high court that in the past three years it has not given any special supply of water to the Wankhede Stadium. “Is the civic body willing to continue this statement that there would be no special supply of water to the stadium during the IPL tournament? File an affidavit,” Justice Oka said.

The BMC also informed the court that it had installed an 80mm pipeline that was supplying water for sanitation purposes of the staff and employees of Wankhede stadium. However, the court told the BMC lawyer submit all the facts in an affidavit and placed the matter for the next hearing on Friday.

The BCCI and MCA also informed the court that since the last three years they had been using well water supplied by water tankers to maintain the grounds and curate pitches.
