Concerns raised over tower radiation

In India, the radiation levels are hundreds of times more, alleged Ms Chawla and Mr Munshi.

Mumbai: Activist Prakash Munshi and actress Juhi Chawla on Tuesday expressed concerns over the impact of mobile tower radiation in India. “The standard of radiation from mobile towers is 100 times higher in India as compared to the standards across the world. It could be hazardous to health,” claimed activist Prakash Munshi and Ms Chawla on Tuesday.

According to the duo, the radiation level is 100 times higher in India as per the findings of a Dubai-based surgeon, Vikas Nehru.

The actual radiation level in Europe is 20mWsq metre for 97 percent of mobile tower antennae, according to Mr Munshi. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency states that, Australia has actual radiation levels ranging from 0.904mW/m2 to 150.99 mW/m2 for the combined radiation from individual base stations, he said.

In India, the radiation levels are hundreds of times more, alleged Ms Chawla and Mr Munshi.

Mr Munshi said, “The government is saying that they have cut the standard to 450 milliwatts (mW) per sq metre for frequencies.”

“We want that standard to be reduced to match with other countries. This is not happening. And at some places like the Haji Ali Juice Centre, we found radiation levels above 100mW, when checked randomly, that is too high,” he said.
