Delegation of Sugar lobby to meet PM Narendra Modi
Mumbai: Representatives of the sugar industry, especially from Maharashtra and Karnataka, have decided to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next few days to discuss the current sugar crisis in the country. All sugar mills’ operatives, whether cooperative or private, met in Mumbai on Friday, to discuss long-term and mid-term issues facing the industry.
A conclusion was reached that export of sugar to neighbouring countries was key to solving the current crisis.
The Indian sugar industry is facing a crisis due to fall in sugar prices internationally coupled with increased production in the country. During the Friday meeting, National Sugar Federation managing director Prakash Naiknaware, and Avinash Verma of Indian Sugar Mill Federation led presentations before the delegates. Both highlighted current issues and those facing the industry in the next two years.
“It was a historic meet. Maharashtra and Karnataka sugar industry leaders were present and gave their suggestions in the meeting,” informed Mr Naiknaware.
It was decided that India needed to export sugar to neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia and others. It was decided that Sharad Pawar would seek the PM’s appointment and a delegation of ten people would meet the PM to put forth their demands. On May 10, a few senior leaders would meet in Mumbai to finalise details of the demands to be placed before the PM.
Two ministries, foreign affairs and commerce, are critical in the export of sugar. India will have to enter trade treaties with neighbouring countries for the export of sugar, especially white sugar. The industry hopes that after meeting the PM under Mr Pawar’s leadership, the issue will be resolved.
