Mumbai: South Mumbai’s D ward, considered a VIP ward, has been found lacking in terms of maintaining sanitation and cleaning pet animals’ excreta.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has fined 16 people of Rs 500 each for failing to clean up after their pets.

The D ward comprises high-profile areas such as Girgaum Chowpatty, August Kranti Maidan, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai Central, Grant Road, Charni Road, Tardeo, Pedder Road, Nepean Sea Road etc.

According to civic officials, there are a large number of pet dogs in this ward and the number of people taking their dogs for a stroll in public places is also significant.

The ward office received several complaints of pet dogs dirtying public places. On this backdrop, the D ward office started a public awareness drive where a team of 32 employees visited various places in D ward to conduct a survey of pet animals along with striking a conversation with their owners.

“During the visits, they also demonstrated how to lift animal poop with the help of faeces-lifting equipment,” said a senior civic official.

According to the civic body’s cleanliness and sanitation byelaws of 2006, a pet owner has to clean his pet’s excreta or face a fine of Rs 500. The law does not allow animal poop to be thrown into public dustbins. The clean-up marshals, deployed by the civic body, keep vigil at the promenade and fine pet-owners who violate the regulations.
