Elphinstone Road station now Prabhadevi
Mumbai: The Western Railway (WR) on Tuesday issued a notification for the renaming of Elphinstone Road station as Prabhadevi. Prabhadevi is a local deity, whose temple is located in the vicinity of the railway station. Earlier, on Sunday, the Central Railway had changed the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.
Several organisations and political parties such the Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded to rename seven railway stations on the Western line including Elphinstone Road. After the renaming of the state, the WR revised Elphinstone Road’s station code to PBHD and numeric code to 08127027.
The commercial department of the Western Railway issued the notification for the renaming of Elphinstone Road as Prabhadevi. The Western Railways also asked all concerned authorities to make necessary changes in the alphabetical order of the station’s names. Some of the other stations that could be renamed on the Western Railway line are Dadar, Charni road and August Kranti. There is a demand to rename Dadar as Chaityabhoomi, Charni road as Gamdevi and Grant Road as August Kranti.
When the Ram Mandir station was inaugurated between Jogeshwari and Goregaon stations on the western line in December last year, Mumbai witnessed a major political tussle between the Shiv Sena and BJP.
