Central Railway to hold safety checks for tracks, car sheds
Mumbai: Given the spurt in incidents of rail fractures, signal failures, overhead wires snapping etc on the mainline and the Harbour, the Central Railway (CR) has kicked off a one-month-long safety inspections of Mumbai suburban’s tracks, car sheds and signals to improve commuter safety. Three teams consisting of senior officials will make these inspections and the final report will be sent to the Railway Board in Delhi. The CR had received a rap on its knuckles last week when the passenger amenity committee from the capital made a three-day inspection of the entire Mumbai suburban and particularly found fault with the Matunga car shed terming it disorganised.
A railway official on the condition of anonymity said, “We will check the Harbour and the Trans-Harbour line, so there will be an inspection in small sections by each of our three teams. This will include Kalamboli and Sanpada car sheds which houses the chunk of the lines trains. Then we will shift on to the mainline where the work will go up to Karjat and Kasara Kasara and include Kalyan and Diva.”
