Man smuggles arms into city, arrested

Mumbai: Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested a 28-year-old man with five country-made pistols and cartridges that he was carrying around with him. The UP-based man, Kisan Kevat, was arrested at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla late Saturday by the Nehru Nagar police. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Arms Act.

Police sources said that they had received a tip-off about Mr Kevat’s arrival at Kurla’s LTT railway station. Mr Kevat, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was caught upon intervention after he got down from the train. Primary investigation revealed that Mr Kevat had bought the pistols in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and smuggled them into Mumbai on an express train. He wanted to sell the firearms at a higher price.

An officer said that Mr Kevat was arrested on Saturday and remanded to police custody till Thursday. Mr Kevat has several other cases registered against him.

Pramod Khoparde, senior police inspector of Nehru Nagar police station, said, “Mr Kevat is a history-sheeter and has 22 cases registered against him at various police stations in Mumbai.”
