Students to get disaster lessons
Mumbai: Come October and students from schools and colleges will learn a thing or two about natural disasters — earthquake, tsunami, landslide and fire among other things at BMC’s special gallery in Parel.
The BMC is in the process of setting up a gallery where lessons regarding such disasters will be imparted through means of films and visuals effects to students.
The civic body officials confirmed that the gallery will be thrown open to public by October, and it would be open for all, private and BMC-run school students. “The work is almost complete. We are confident that the auditorium will be made available for children by October. Decision hasn’t been taken to charge the children for this service. Even if we do, the charges will be nominal,” said a senior official from BMC’s disaster management department.
He further added, “Scientific background behind the occurrence of any disaster like cyclone Ockhi or land slide will be explained to students. The pattern will be like that of Nehru planetarium, Worli. We will also guide them about Dos and Don’ts during such incidents.”
In the backdrop of the recent spate of fires in the city, the BMC has decided to take steps to create awareness and impart lessons on disaster preparedness among youngsters. “The 3D auditorium at city institute of disaster management is complete. Around Rs 3.48 crore has been spent on it last year,” the BMC budget stated.
The auditorium will be at Parel. Officials plan to screen 3D films to students on natural disasters and how to tackle them at the gallery. The project was proposed in the budget this year and the civic body has set aside Rs 4 crore to build the gallery.
