Woman plummets to death in Matheran

The Nerul police is looking into whether or not her husband had pushed her.

Mumbai: A 30-year-old Diva woman died after falling into an 800-foot-deep ravine after losing her balance at Matheran’s Belvedere Point on Saturday morning, the police said on Sunday.

The woman, Sangita Mishra, was taking a stroll with her husband, six-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter and her husband’s friend, when she slipped and fell into the dense ravine.

According to the Nerul police, they received a call on Saturday morning from a local resident, stating that they had seen a woman caught in foliage and she appeared to be motionless.

Police sub-inspector (PSI) Shivaji Dhawale of the Nerul police station said, “After receiving the call, we immediately sought the help of the Matheran Mitra Rescue rappelling team and Sahyadri Rescue Team and with the help of local adivasis the body was extricated.”

He also said, “The total rescue operation lasted around three hours and Mishra was rushed to the district–run government hospital of Karjat where she was declared dead and her body was kept for a post-mortem.”

The police officer added, “No one has filed any complaint. We have registered an accidental death report (ADR). We are looking at the matter from all angles since she was accompanied by her husband, two kids and her husband’s friend.”

We are investigating whether or her husband had pushed her as it is a mystery why he did not lodge a complaint when she fell, more so since it was an accident, he said.
