Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai police has registered a complaint against a company that had recently repaired a part of the Sion-Panvel highway. After the repair work, the road has become slippery, leading to four accidents and the death of two people. The police officials said that the company used a high amount of tar on the road and didn’t even cover the potholes in most of the area. The police team has called a meeting to discuss the matter with the company.

According to Nerul police officials, around 100 accidents have been witnessed on the Sion-Panvel highway in last three months due to potholes. Police officials said, “On Tuesday morning four cars slipped on the road and collided at Uran on Sion-Panvel highway. Two commuters were seriously injured, and one died on the spot because of the accident. We rushed to the spot and started finding out the reason behind the accident. We found that one of the road patches on Uran has become so slippery as an excessive amount of tar used during repair work. On the other part of the roads, there are several potholes, which the company didn’t repair.”  The PWD department has given road repair work contract to Sion-Panvel Toll Private Limited (SPTPL), who has failed to cover potholes and maintain the road properly because of which accidents are taking place, said the police. The Nerul police has registered FIR against the company under IPC section.

The police said, “Motorists have regularly complained about potholes and condition of the road, which may pose risks to their life. Recently, one biker died after his bike hit a big pothole on Juinagar flyover. It has also led to traffic congestion. Vehicles cannot pass through the area smoothly. Commuters are driving slowly and carefully to avoid potholes, which has led to traffic snarls.”

Navi Mumbai police commission held a meeting with company’s officials and PWD officials to address the issue, said an officer on condition of anonymity.
