State tells BMC to rethink parking fees
Mumbai: Residents of South Mumbai, who are opposing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) pay and park policy, have received a boost as the state government has asked the civic body to reconsider its plans to charge commercial rates in residential areas for parking vehicles.
It has also asked to hold public hearings to resolve people’s grievances on the issue.
The Pay and Park Action committee, led by Colaba MLA Raj Purohit, called on minister of home (state) Ranjit Patil regarding the proposed parking policy.
Objecting to the policy in its present form, they said not only are the parking rates high but the BMC also has not carried out prior survey before implementing the policy in A ward on a trial basis.
Mr Purohit said, “We had a fruitful discussion with the minister, who has asked the BMC to consider the demands put up by residents. He has directed the BMC not to impose commercial parking rates for residential areas.”
Mr Patil has also asked BMC to hold public hearings on the lines of the Metro network.
