Monorail-phase 2 misses trial run, delayed again

The trial runs were supposed to start on October 10. However, the deadline was missed.

Mumbai: The commissioning of phase-2 of c (Wadala to Jacob Circle) is set to be delayed yet again as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is yet to receive the safety certificate from the commissioner of railway safety (CRS). The trial runs were supposed to start on October 10. However, the deadline was missed.

The CRS needs to conduct trial runs for around 3,000 km on the same stretch then issue a safety certificate. Also, signalling and communication failures were recorded during the testing process of the monorail. The authority is expecting to start the monorail phase-2 line before the year-end.

“We received a setback with regards to communication testing. Some components failed, and now they have to replace these components. Till the replacement is not done, we will not be able to complete this test. So this is a major setback,” said a senior MMRDA official.

Earlier in October, CM Devendra Fadnavis had assured that monorail phase-2 will commence from December but it seems that the authority will have a tough time meeting the deadline. “We hope to start soon and are making all efforts to ensure that we start by this year-end. Getting the certificate from CRS is one step and tests are going on,” added the official.

At least four rakes are required for trail runs. For the first phase of the monorail (Chembur-Wadala corridor), the authority has 10 rakes of which only four are operational.
