Mumbai: The special CBI court on Wednesday wrapped up the trial in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh and 2006 Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter case after the defence lawyers concluded their final arguments.

On the last day of final arguments CBI counsel B.P. Raju told the judge that the case was handed over to the CBI five years after the incident and examination of witnesses began 12 years after the crime was committed due to which there were some ‘lacuna’ in the probe. He also said that some of the star witnesses also turned hostile during the trial that hampered the case of prosecution.

Responding to this special judge S.J. Sharma said, “I don’t blame CID (which investigated the crime at initial stage). I don’t blame the CBI. There are statements of witnesses and if they come here (before the court) and say something else, it is not your fault. You did your job.”

The special CBI judge S.J. Sharma has given a tentative date of Decem-ber 20, for pronouncement of the judgement in case the judgement is ready by that date.

During the course of trial, the prosecution examined 210 witnesses, of which 92 turned hostile.

According to the CBI, the accused police officers had abducted Sohr-abuddin and Kausar Bi on November 26, 2005 when they were travelling to Sangli in Maha-rashtra from Hyderabad in a private bus along with Prajapati. Prajap-ati, who was a witness to the incident, was allege-dly killed by the Rajas-Than and Gujarat police
