Mumbai: The First Year Junior College (FYJC) students can now apply for Bifocal courses ‘online’ instead of following the lengthy offline process. The state education department has added these courses in the admission portal as Science Bifocal, Commerce Bifocal and Arts Bifocal along with the general streams.

Each streams has three options, which include subjects like Electronic, Electrical Management and Computer Science for Science. For the Commerce stream, subjects include Banking, Office Automation and Commerce Marketing. Finally for Arts, the subject options are Horticulture, Fish Processing and Geology. Initially, along with the admission process, the students, had to fill an offline form from the respective college and wait for the list based on their percentage and seat availability.

The department received several complaints regarding the confusion in allotment of seats for these courses. “There were no clarity from the college’s side regarding what they offer in the bifocal courses, the number of seats they have, etc. Students contacted us about this matter, which is why we decided to list bifocal courses in the FYJC online admission process,” said a senior official of the department. He further said, “There will be two section of one stream,  that is, Science General and Science Bifocal and a similar pattern will be for Commerece and Arts as well.”

“By Bifocal courses, the students can go according to their preferences instead of doing what the stream is offering. For example, if a junior college student after doing Science for two years, desires to do Mechanical Engineering. They don’t need to study Biology in junior college. Instead, the student can go for Scooter and Motor Cycle Servicing – which is a Bifocal course to make a better before-engineering path,” said Renuka Shivbalan, a senior teacher.

How does it help students

Bifocal courses comprise of technical, project-based, creative and marketing aspects. They give students practical knowledge and are also easy scoring subjects. Those aspiring to go for after class-12 competitive exams like CET,  NEET, CA or CPT will  benefit.
