Emissions from transport (16.4 per cent) and industry (15 per cent) have been found to be the primary contributors to PM2.5 levels in the city.

Mumbai: Mumbai’s PM2.5 emissions from the transport sector are the highest in the country at 15,600 tonnes, according to a latest study. The report by Urban Emissions based on air pollution across the country has highlighted that overall emission from this particulate matter is five times the limits prescribed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Mumbai in 2018 and is likely to increase by 22.8 per cent in the next 10 years.

Emissions from transport (16.4 per cent) and industry (15 per cent) have been found to be the primary contributors to PM2.5 levels in the city. Other major factors include dust pollution, diesel gen-sets and sea salt however a large part of PM2.5 is from outside the urban air-shed, according to the study. The total PM2.5 emissions in 2018 have been recorded at 49,600 tonnes but the same are projected to increase to 60,950 tonnes by 2030.
