Maharashtra legislature to praise big political stalwarts

Pawar has served as chief minister of Maharashtra from 1988 to 1991 and from 1993 to 1995.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra legislature during the ongoing budget session on March 16 will bring in a congratulatory resolution for late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her birth centenary year, for NCP chief Sharad Pawar on completion of half-a-century in politics, and for PWP MLA Ganpatrao Deshmukh on completion of 50 years in the legislature.

The decision to bring in the resolution congratulating the three veterans was taken in the business advisory meeting of the BJP-led state government. Parliamentary affairs minister Vinod Tawde told The Asian Age, “The business advisory committee has decided to move the resolution for the three leaders for their political contribution.”

Congress welcomed the move with the party’s Mumbai president Sanjay Nirupam saying, “Indira Gandhi was no doubt a powerful leader of the country. The entire nation is celebrating the birth centenary year for her. It is good if the Maharashtra government is also going to pay respect to her in the Assembly.”

Pawar has served as chief minister of Maharashtra from 1988 to 1991 and from 1993 to 1995. He was recently felicitated for his political contribution and completion of 50 years in the field. Deshmukh is the seniormost leader of the Assembly and has been elected 11 times from the Sangola constituency in Solapur district.
