Private vehicles increase, few takers for public ones
Mumbai: Motor vehicles have increased by 7.6% in the state and 3.14 crore vehicles were registered till January 1 this year, as per the state economic survey report. It further says that there are 31.79 lakh vehicles plying on Mumbai roads of which 18.89 lakh are two-wheelers. While private vehicles are increasing, the passengers of public transport are decreasing constantly.
According to the economic survey report, private vehicles have shown a sharp increase of 8.2 % in the state and the number of cars and small vehicles has reached up to 48.10 lakh, against 44.46 lakh last year. Out of this, 10.81 lakh are in Mumbai. Two wheelers are also increasing in the state by 7.6 % and the total registration has touched 2.30 crore, against 2.13 crore last year. Out of this, 18.89 lakh are registered in Mumbai.
While private vehicles are increasing, there has been a sharp decrease in the use of public transport which is resulting in traffic issues in the major cities. But Navi Mumbai municipal transport and Nagpur municipal transport are doing well and the passengers have increased compared to last year.
