MUMBAI: Though Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs across the country have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the growing number of atrocities against dalits and warned that they would quit the party by running an online campaign, dalit BJP MPs in Maharashtra have said they would not support anti-party activities.

They agreed that atrocities had occurred but said that the government was doing enough to combat them. They claimed that the Modi government did many things for dalits in just four years, which the earlier government could not in 70.

Terming the rebel by UP MPs as “personal”, BJP MP Sunil Gaikwad from Latur said that the Modi government has done much for the community. “For the first time, the government celebrated Constitution Day. Dr Ambedkar’s house in London was bought and is being converted into a memorial. Dikshabhoomi in Nagpur has received funds.

There are many initiatives like this taken by the government. What Modiji has done in four years for dalits, the earlier government could not do it in 70. The MPs who have raised allegations must have personal issues. Many things happen, even atrocities, but one cannot blame Mr Modi for that,” Mr Gaikwad said.

A BJP MP from Solapur, Sharad Bansode, also said that voices of dissent in the BJP were not unanimous.
