Mumbai: A 24-year-old woman from Colaba has given birth to a baby girl weighing 5.3kg at state-run Cama Hospital. Both mother and baby are doing well. According to doctors, this is a rare case where the baby’s weight is more than normal. A normal baby weighs around 3 to 3.5 kg.

Completing the total nine months of her pregnancy, Kalpana Pore delivered the baby weighing 5.336kg. The normal weight of a newborn baby is between 2.5 and 3.5kg. According to doctors, the most common cause of overweight babies is diabetic mothers but that wasn’t the case here. The baby was delivered on time but Ms Pore had to undergo a C-section because of high blood pressure. The baby girl is 53 cm in height and has been admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) ward of the hospital.

This is a rare case where an overweight baby was born to a non-diabetic mother at the same Cama Hospital. Dr Rajshri Katke, medical superintendent of the hospital, said, “The baby has been kept at the NICU ward for further evaluation and medical treatment. Doctors have warned that overweight babies tend to develop medical issues later in life,” she said.
