Mumbai only city with no new nods for bldgs: Kirit Somaiya

Last month, BMC had agreed that due to the high court's ban, the proposals for redevelopment in suburbs have come down by around 50 percent.

Mumbai: Targeting Shiv Sena over mishandling the issue of dumping grounds in the city, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirit Somaiya on Thursday said, as the issue has not been handled efficiently, Mumbai is the only city in the world where no new permission for construction purposes has been granted in the past one year.

The Bombay high court in February 2016 had directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Coporation (BMC) not to give new permission to any new construction of commercial or residential building in the city till all the rules of solid waste management are complied with.

The court was hearing a bunch of public interest litigations (PIL) alleging that solid waste management rules are not followed at the dumping grounds.

Last month, BMC had agreed that due to the high court’s ban, the proposals for redevelopment in suburbs have come down by around 50 per cent.

Vinod Chithore, chief engineer, DP, said, “There has been a decrease, but the exact figures of the (effect on) proposals due to high court ban will have to checked.”

However, city-based architect Arqam Shaikh said, “… due to the HC’s ban the proposals have gone down but in 2016 real estate was affected due to several other reasons like that of demonetisation.”
