Thane: A 25-year-old mobile phone repair shop owner has been arrested for allegedly killing his live-in partner, an IT engineer, police said on Thursday.

The accused, Vijay Jharkad and the victim, a 30-year-old IT engineer - a divorcee - were in a live-in relationship and staying in Badlapur, Inspector J A Agarkar said.

On the night of March 7, the accused came home and was to take his dinner when the victim's sister called up. Later, there was a quarrel between the couple.

The family of the victim was not in favour of the accused marrying her as there was a disparity between their educational qualifications (Jharkad was 12th passed), he said.

On the same night, Jharkad strangled his live-in partner to death, locked the house from outside and went to his friend and informed him about the crime, Agarkar said.

Police later arrested Jharkad based on the information given by his friend and booked him under IPC section 302 (murder).
