City experiences heavy rainfall since Saturday

Meanwhile, the IMD has still not withdrawn the warning of 'very heavy to extreme' rain till June 12.

Mumbai: The monsoon made landfall in Mumbai in the early hours of Saturday as the city experienced heavy spells since 1.30 am. During the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday, the Santacruz observatory recorded 37mm of rain while Colaba recorded 38.2mm of rainfall. According to Skymet weather, a private weather forecasting agency, after taking a break in the morning, the rain again picked up pace during the noon hours with visibility dropping to 1,000 metres in certain areas. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said that on and off rains were likely to remain on Sunday.

The city area of Mumbai received an average 134mm rainfall between 8am and 9pm; followed by 87mm in the western suburbs; and 54mm in the eastern suburbs. Areas like B ward, Parel, Dharavi and F South Ward received the highest rainfall during this period. “Enhanced rainfall activity over coastal Karnataka, Goa and coastal Maharashtra due to strengthening of the monsoon is likely to continue till June 10. Extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Goa and in south-coastal Maharashtra is also very likely during June 9-10,” read the IMD statement.

An IMD official said, “In Mumbai, the rainfall intensity is likely to reduce from Sunday, however there is a possibility of heavy spells for a few hours. On and off showers will continue during late night and early morning.”

Meanwhile, the IMD has still not withdrawn the warning of ‘very heavy to extreme’ rain till June 12.
