Mumbai: A pathologists’ association has alleged that the state’s municipal corporations failed to conduct surveys in order to determine the number of bogus pathology laboratories despite the state medical education department asking them to so.

According to the Maharashtra Association of Practising Pathologists and Micro-biologists (MAPPM), bogus pathology labs are flourishing across the state and city. The presence of such labs can be detrimental to patients because wrong reports lead to wrong diagnoses, the association said.

The MAPPAM had asked the state government to find out the number of fake pathology labs. The state government, in turn, had instructed municipal corporations to conduct a survey to find the number of such pathologists and send it a report.

But a reply to an RTI query, filed by the MAPPM, revealed that apart from the Nashik municipal corporation, no civic body showed seriousness in pursuing this matter.

Dr Prasad Kulkarni, a member of MAPPM, said, “Bogus pathology labs are increasing. It is important that strict action is initiated against them. But there is no information about legal and illegal labs.”
