Mumbai: Mumbai finally received some relief from the summer swelter as pre-monsoon showers hit the city on Sunday night with several areas witnessing light rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning.

Weathermen have stated that these are signs of pre-monsoon activity and the official onset of the monsoon will occur on June 17.

The light rainfall over the state capital has been attributed to the weather system over the Arabian Sea. According to Skymet Weather, a private weather forecasting agency, an offshore trough is extending from South Maharashtra up to the Kerala coast. Moreover, a low-pressure area has formed over the Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining region.

“The system will intensify even more and start moving in the northwest direction along the Karnataka and Maharashtra coast, thus bringing in light to moderate rain and thundershowers over the southern parts of Maharashtra and Konkan coast including Mumbai,” read Skymet’s report .

More such showers are expected over the next two days.
