Police seals 110 petrol pumps in Maharashtra

The police said that most of the accused are well-educated software engineers.

Mumbai: The Thane police raided and sealed a total of 110 petrol pumps in Maharashtra and has also got names of some of the chipmakers involved in the petrol pump scam. Police teams have been formed and sent to two states to arrest the accused.

During interrogation, the police received information about four more accused who were involved in making chips and software. The accused, who run a chain of chip fitter; software maker and chipmaker, are engineers by profession and have been making chips since past few years.

An official said, “We cannot disclose the place wherein we are searching for the accused as they might be alerted of the same. But we have found that most accused involve in this scam are well educated software engineers.” Three accused have already been arrested and have been identified as Anil Sonawane, a resident of Pune; Kumar Thakrey, resident of Nagpur and M Nemade, resident of Navi Mumbai.

The police has said that some petrol pumps were suspected of using electronic chips to manipulate fuel discharge in a manner such that less fuel is discharged for what is shown on the receipt. Shetey, who is an MSc in electronics, was earlier arrested from Dombivali by the UP police for having manufactured such chips at his workshop. The chips were then allegedly sold for '50,000 to the accused in UP.
