HC rejects 1993 blast accused's parole plea
Mumbai: The Bombay high court rejected the parole request of 1993 serial blasts convict Bashir Ahmed Khairullah, observing that permitting him to step out of prison might prove adverse to the ‘security of society.’ A division bench comprising of acting Chief Justice V. K. Tahilramani and Justice M. S. Sonak dismissed the plea filed by Khairullah in 2016.
Khairullah, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1993 serial blasts case and is lodged in Nashik jail, had filed the application challenging the decision of the prison authorities to reject his request for parole as his wife was ill. The jail authorities had rejected his plea on the ground that he had failed to attach a medical certificate of his wife’s health along with his parole application.
Khairullah finally amended his application and attached a medical certificate provided by a private doctor in November 2016. But prison authorities and the Nashik Divisional Commissioner rejected it as the medical certificate had been issued by a private doctor. While the plea was pending, the Maharashtra government amended its furlough and parole rules.
