Deshmukh writes to the gov, wants to be reinstated

Mumbai: The Mumbai university (MU) vice-chancellor (VC) Sanjay Deshmukh has allegedly written a letter to the Maharashtra government asking for reinstatement. This was confirmed by the office of the chancellor of MU and governor of Maharashtra, Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, who had sent Deshmukh on an indefinite leave and appointed Devanand Shinde in his place. Shinde is also the VC of Shivaji university, Kolhapur.

MU sources said that Deshmukh wanted to be reinstated as the issue of delayed results had subsided. Confirming the matter, the MU chancellor’s office told The Asian Age that the varsity was focusing exclusively on declaring all pending results and resolving the issue. “We have got a letter from Deshmukh but our focus is on the remaining results and all other important problems at the university. We haven’t got any confirmation about the status of Deshmukh’s letter so we can’t say anything about it now,” said the office.

Now, only eight results are pending declaration out of the 477 examinations conducted by MU in April and May. The varsity claims it will declare all remaining results within a week’s time. The problem began when Deshmukh confirmed that all answer papers (around 17 lakh) of final-year degree college students would be assessed online through a system called “on-screen marking” by assessors or teachers. However, things did not pan out as planned due to lack of coordination and understanding between the university and the teachers.
