Mumbai: The Kurla plot issue is likely to witness a strong battle between the ruling Shiv Sena and Opposition parties as the proposal to acquire the controversial 1,978-sq.mt plot reserved for a garden in Kurla will be tabled in the civic general body meeting on December 13.

The Opposition are likely to target the Sena, which is facing heavy flak with the allegations of land grabbing on this issue. The issue is also likely to be highlighted in the upcoming Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections.

“In the house, we will try to expose Sena on the Kurla plot issue. Its leaders are trying to grab land by causing a huge loss to the BMC,” said Opposition leader Ravi Raja from Congress.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had decided last year to acquire it by paying `17 crore to the owner. The plot, marked as an open space in the development plan, has been encroached upon by slums.

Based on the legal department’s opinion, the improvements committee decided to acquire it by paying only `3 crore to the owner, and utilising the remaining amount for shifting slum-dwellers.

However, former committee chairman Anant Nar objected to the acquisition process saying that it would be a waste of public money. There were encroachments and it was difficult to shift the slum-dwellers to free the land, as the BMC does not have space, he said. Sena passed the proposal without allowing any discussion in the house, which enraged the Opposition.

Taking note of the following outcry, the Sena decided to take a U-turn on the proposal.
