Pune minor arrested in Sawant murder case
Mumbai: The Samata Nagar police arrested a class 12 student from Pune for his involvement in the murder of former Shiv Sena corporator Ashok Sawant on Sunday night. According to the police, the 17-year-old was part of a team of three people, who stabbed Sawant with a sharp weapons. A Samata Nagar police team recovered blood-stained clothes from the boy’s residence in Pune.
Officials claimed that the boy had worn these clothes while committing the murder. He had been promised a hefty sum for being part of the crime. This is the third arrest in the case, which comes after two of the earlier arrested persons named him. The main accused in the murder, identified as Jagdish Pawar, alias Jagga, is still absconding. According to the police, the motive is not yet clear and the arrest of all accused was crucial.
“A minor boy was brought from Pune and after thorough inquiry, he has been taken into custody on Wednesday. He will be produced before the juvenile court in due course,” said Vinay Rathod, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), zone XII.
Investigators said the juvenile is a science student, who was particularly skilled in dissection. It is believed that he was allegedly hired because of this skill. He has no past criminal record. Officials added that the minor was acquainted with Pawar and the other wanted accused and made several trips to Mumbai to meet them.
“The boy was also armed and he has confessed to stabbing Sawant several times. All the three accused were armed with sharp weapons, which are yet to be recovered," according to police officer.
